Hello and welcome to the club!
So here's how this is going to work. On the first of every odd-numbered month, one of our members gets to choose a book from a running list. Once the book is announced, it is up to each of us to track down a copy and read it. There's no hard and fast deadline, so you can start discussing the book as soon as you're done reading it (or even earlier, if you aren't afraid of spoilers).
As for who gets to pick, you are eligible as long as you participated in the most recent book discussion and haven't picked in at least a year. I swear to be impartial--I'll draw the names out of a hat or something--but even if I'm not, there's nothing you can do about it.
I'll start a dedicated thread for each book, though you can start your own threads and discussions if you feel the need to branch off. They'll be around even after we've moved on to a new book, so you can continue to discuss an older book if you want.
What we actually talk about is completely open, as long as it's related to the book in question. This isn't a lit class, so don't be expecting long-winded discussions about how mythological motifs are infused into the narrative by way of post-modernist recontextualization or anything like that. If all we talk about is what we like and what we don't like, so be it. We're here to have fun and get exposed to science-fiction.
As for decorum, we're all adults here, so let's just act like it. Try to keep bad words and insults to a minimum, and hopefully I won't have to set up any stricter rules than that.
I'll have a separate thread set up for the actual book list, where you can post your own suggestions and such.
So, with that, feel free to get started.
The book for May/June 2013 is
FLOWERS FOR ALGERNON by Daniel Keyes
